Philippines SRRV: The Retirement Visa from $1,500 Deposit

The Philippines’ Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV) is one of the cheapest permanent residency options in the world. Depending on your age and pension status, the required bank deposit ranges from $1,500 to $50,000. Combined with English as a national language and a cost of living under $600/month outside Manila, it’s the budget retiree’s ultimate play.

The Deposit Tiers

SRRV Smile (50+ with pension)

  • Bank deposit: $1,500 (government pension holders)
  • Or $10,000 (private pension holders)
  • Deposit is held in a Philippines Retirement Authority (PRA) escrow account

SRRV Classic (50+)

  • Bank deposit: $10,000 (if 50+ with pension of $800+/month)
  • Or $20,000 (if 50+ without pension)
  • Deposit can be converted to an approved real estate investment after 30 days

SRRV Classic (35-49)

  • Bank deposit: $50,000
  • Convertible to real estate

The Benefits

  • Permanent residency — valid indefinitely
  • Multiple entry — come and go as you please
  • No ACR I-Card required (the SRRV card serves as your ACR)
  • Tax exemption on pension income brought into the Philippines
  • Import duty exemption on personal effects (one-time)

The Cost of Living

LocationMonthly (USD)
Manila (Makati/BGC)$800-1,400
Cebu City$500-800
Dumaguete$400-700
Davao City$400-600
Siargao$500-800

Outside Manila, the Philippines is one of the cheapest English-speaking countries in the world.

The Healthcare

Manila and Cebu have excellent private hospitals:

  • St. Luke’s Medical Center, Makati Medical Center, and Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital
  • Specialist visit: $15-30
  • Private room hospitalization: $50-100/day
  • Comprehensive health plan (HMO): $40-80/month

Rural areas and islands have limited medical facilities. Medical evacuation to Manila should be factored into planning.

The Infrastructure Limitation

Philippine internet is improving but unreliable outside Metro Manila and Cebu. PLDT and Globe offer fiber (50-200 Mbps) in urban areas. Starlink is now available nationwide and is the recommended solution for island or rural living ($30-40/month).
