Laos: The Quiet Southeast Asian Base Under $600/Month

Laos is Southeast Asia’s most overlooked country for digital nomads. While Thailand and Bali have become saturated with remote workers, Laos remains quiet, cheap, and genuinely off the beaten path. Vientiane — the world’s sleepiest capital city — costs under $600/month and sits directly across the Mekong from Thailand.

The Visa Structure

  • Tourist Visa on Arrival: 30 days, $40 (available at airports and major land borders)
  • Extension: 60 additional days at the Immigration Office in Vientiane for ~$2/day
  • Total possible stay: 90 days
  • Business Visa (B2): Requires a sponsoring Lao company, but available through local agents for $200-300 with multiple entries

There is no digital nomad visa. Most remote workers cycle tourist visas or obtain B2 visas through local agents.

The Cost of Living

Vientiane:

CategoryMonthly (USD)
1BR apartment$150-300
Groceries + eating out$100-200
Transport (motorbike rental)$30-50
Mobile (Unitel unlimited)$5-10
Health insurance$40-80
Total$325-640

Luang Prabang is 20-30% more expensive due to tourism but offers stunning UNESCO-listed temples and French colonial architecture.

The Infrastructure

  • Internet: 4G (Unitel, Lao Telecom) is available in urban areas. Fiber is expanding in Vientiane (10-30 Mbps). Starlink is available.
  • Healthcare: Very limited. Serious medical issues require crossing the Friendship Bridge to Udon Thani, Thailand (45 minutes) or flying to Bangkok
  • Flights: Wattay Airport (Vientiane) has connections to Bangkok, Hanoi, Seoul, and Kuala Lumpur
  • Thai proximity: Vientiane is a 20-minute drive from the Thai border. Many expats live in Vientiane and shop/access healthcare in Thailand

The Tax Structure

Laos taxes residents at progressive rates up to 25%. However, enforcement on foreign-sourced income for tourist visa holders is nonexistent. The Lao tax administration is focused on domestic businesses and formal employment.

The Lifestyle

Laos is for the bootstrapper who values quiet, nature, and genuine cultural immersion over coworking spaces and nomad networking events. The pace is slow. The people are kind. The Mekong sunsets are unforgettable.
